Privacy Policy

Last updated: 3 Sep 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how IsTheCrossingDown? ("the App," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and shares information when you use our mobile application on Android and iOS.

By using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.

1. Information We Collect

Device location

The App accesses your device's location on-device only, in order to show relevant nearby level crossings and local information. Your precise or approximate location is not transmitted to, stored on, or processed by our servers. Location data is used solely within the App, on your device.

Advertising identifiers

The App displays reward-based advertisements using Google AdMob. To serve and measure ads, AdMob may collect and use:

  • Android: the Google Advertising ID (GAID)
  • iOS: the Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA), accessed via Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) framework, for which you will be asked for consent

We do not access these identifiers ourselves beyond what is required to initialise AdMob and request consent. See Section 3 for details on Google's role as a third-party ad provider.

Anonymous user identifier (GUID)

The App does not require you to create an account, and we do not collect usernames, email addresses, or passwords. Instead, each installation is assigned a randomly generated GUID used to identify your app instance for functional purposes, such as linking your device to push notifications. This GUID is not tied to your real-world identity.

Push notification tokens

If you enable push notifications, the App registers your device with:

  • Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging / GCM (Android)
  • Apple Push Notification service (APNs) (iOS)

These services issue a device-specific push token, which we store (associated with your GUID) in order to deliver notifications to you. We do not use these tokens for any other purpose.

Information we do not collect

We do not collect your name, email address, physical address, phone number, or any account credentials. We do not use social logins.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the limited information described above to:

  • Provide core app functionality, such as using on-device location to show relevant local content
  • Deliver push notifications you have opted into
  • Display and measure reward-based advertisements through Google AdMob
  • Maintain and troubleshoot the App

3. Third-Party Services

Google AdMob

We use Google AdMob to serve reward ads. AdMob may collect device identifiers, ad interaction data, and other information as described in Google's own privacy policy. Google acts as an independent data controller/processor for this data.

Apple App Tracking Transparency

On iOS, we request permission via Apple's ATT framework before accessing the IDFA for advertising purposes. You can change your choice at any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.

Push notification providers

4. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. We do not transmit device location to our servers. The only third parties that receive data from the App are Google (AdMob, Firebase/GCM) and Apple (APNs), for advertising and push notification delivery. These third parties may process data according to their own privacy policies, linked above.

5. Data Retention

We retain your GUID, registered crossings, notification preferences, push token, and Tickets balance for as long as the App installation is used at least once every 60 days.

If an app installation is not opened for 60 consecutive days, we automatically and permanently delete all server-side data associated with that installation. The next time the App is opened after this, the installation is treated as unregistered, and you will need to register again (see our Terms of Use) before you can monitor crossings or receive notifications.

Uninstalling the App discards your local installation identifier immediately. Any associated server-side data is removed either through this automatic 60-day inactivity process, or sooner if you request deletion via our Delete Your Data page.

6. Children's Privacy

The App is not directed at children under 13 (or the relevant age of digital consent in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

7. Your Choices and Rights

  • Location: disable location permissions at any time via your device settings; core location-based features may not function without it.
  • Advertising ID / IDFA: opt out of personalised advertising via your device's ad settings.
  • Push notifications: disable notifications at any time via your device settings.
  • Data deletion: since we do not maintain personally identifiable accounts, most data tied to your GUID is deleted automatically upon uninstall. To delete server-side data on demand, see our Delete Your Data instructions.

Depending on your location, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR (EEA/UK) or CCPA (California), including the right to access, correct, or delete your data, and to object to processing. Contact us to exercise these rights.

8. International Data Transfers

Data processed by Google and Apple as described above may be transferred to and processed in countries other than your own, including the United States, in accordance with their respective privacy policies and applicable safeguards.

9. Security

We take reasonable measures to protect the limited data we handle, but no method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted here with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.

11. In-App Tickets (Rewards)

The App includes an optional in-app reward currency called Tickets, which you can earn by watching optional reward-based advertisements (see Section 3, Google AdMob). Tickets are used to unlock in-app functionality, such as registering additional level crossings for notifications.

Your Tickets balance is stored on our servers, associated with your anonymous GUID (see Section 1). Tickets have no monetary value, cannot be purchased with real money, and cannot be transferred, traded, gifted, or sold to another user, account, or device. If you delete your data (see our Delete Your Data page), your Tickets balance is permanently deleted along with it.

See our Terms of Use for the full terms governing Tickets.
